Before you laugh at me and say, “the two things are not alike!” Reddit used to be my favorite place for interacting with others and having real engaging conversations. Easily able to find your own little network or niche. Now, everything is censored. For example the business intelligence subreddit, since I’m a BI developer, I can’t even talk to anyone anymore. Everything’s removed immediately, auto moderator just deletes anything, literally anything, deleted. You can’t talk with anyone anymore on there…
Now we all thought that Lemmy would be a good alternative, but let’s be honest, most people don’t want to use Lemmy. Look at some of the engineering communities here, they are just non-existent. Business intelligence doesn’t exist, barely any computer engineering or software development subreddits here, no project management, etc… Lemmy is flawed at its core for one simple reason: users cannot moderate what they see. Only a special privileged group called moderators can do that. That is not a good way to run society. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. We’ve seen that so many times, let me just another example. There are already communities which have examples of moderators abusing their power
So let me is not a good place to find a niche, but blue sky actually is because it’s filled with real people, has no censorship or moderation except what the user chooses to moderate themselves which is exactly how it should be.
Reddit is flawed at its core, and it’s important to note that because
Once again the timing of the feeds makes for great irony…
The revolutionary potential of a media platform is inverse to how mainstream it has become. Lemmy and mastadon don’t need to be big to be influential because the people who show up to those platforms are (relatively) engaged in their AFK communities.
Lemmy is flawed at its core for one simple reason: users cannot moderate what they see.
What user moderation does BlueSky have that Lemmy doesn’t. On Lemmy, you can block users, communities, and instances. Different clients can also do keyword blocking, and there’s talks on having this be done serverside.
