I think an easier way to understand it - anyone can host a lemmy instance, and they will talk to other lemmy instances. It’s like if anyone could make and host their own subreddits on their own websites, and they would by default be accessible from Reddit.

So I have a lemmy.world account (and I think you do too), but the person you responded to has a lemy.lol account. We have accounts on different websites, but they use the same language and can talk to each other. We see this conversation on lemmy.world, they see the same conversation on lemy.lol.

Think of .ml as a Russian-run communist version of Reddit where the moderation is exponentially more strict and what you’re allowed to talk about is determined by those that run the instance.

Essentially it’s a near perfect example of what it would be like if North Korea and Russia united into one giant shithole of a political ideology, and then yarfed up its propaganda into one self-contained social media site.

There is no one “Lemmy”. Different people host different copies that sync with each other, but they all have their own moderators. Lemmy.ml is run by “davel” so just do a web search for “davel mod” to learn about the reputation they’ve earned.

Those are other Lemmy instances, like how we’re on lemmy.world. “ml” as in “Marxism-Leninism”, it’s known to be full of tankies.

It helps to think of instances (Lemmy.ml is an instance) as an imaginary layer between reddit the platform/company and subreddits. Themselves miniature versions of reddit with their own subreddits, often overlapping thematically with the subsubreddits of other mini reddits. Sometimes these mini reddits have an over arching theme or vision, and sometimes they are just a hobby hosting exercise. But all of these miniature reddits can theoretically exchange posts and comments by choosing to federate with each other, by virtue of being under the same reddit platform.

Now remove reddit entirely and change the platform into a protocol and you’re close enough for government work.

It’s the instance run by the creators of Lemmy, people on .world love to constantly redbait about it and other left-wing instances because they tend to enforce rules against bigotry while also critically supporting a lot of US state enemies.

I don’t see people being censored around here for complaining about Russia being a capitalist misogynist transphobic shit hole (many such cases tbh), but homophobic insults against Putin? that’s not going to fly because it’s still homophobia, and doesn’t even amount to real criticism.

People mistake the fervant opposition to the US empire in these spaces as blind support of these state enemies, and that’s just missing a lot of nuance and boiling it down to “lemmy.ml funded by Russia/China”

That said I kinda wish I was getting getting paid by Russia/China, here I am working a day job like a chump to pay rent.

It’s hilarious that you pretend to think people don’t like .ml because it’s anti-bigotry. All of the major instances that I’ve seen are anti-bigotry. Including- and especially .world.

In fact, I’d love to see you provide evidence of people from .world being upset at .ml’s anti-bigotry stance.

What people hate about .ml is easily proven in the modlogs. The numerous comment removals and user bans as result of the vague catch-all “rule 1” violation- a violation that they never explain in the logs. That instance and its moderation is legendarily known for being heavy-handed and unfairly biased against evening they disagree with- and unlike your false accusations, this is provable with a quick visit to the modlogs.

          quick visit to the modlog:

          spoiler

post removed from .ml for insulting people:

temp banned from .world for insulting people and trivializing the ongoing genocide

doesn’t seem particularly heavy handed or unfairly biased to me

there’s also been quite a lot of people at .world going on the record as pissed at the position blahaj took on misgendering/neo pronouns. that’s the same position you can find on .ml, I’ll ban for that myself if I see it in a comm I mod

In fact, I’d love to see you provide evidence of people from .world being upset at .ml’s anti-bigotry stance.

I would love to find one person complaining about .ml that doesn’t have a post history littered with misogyny/transphobia/chauvinism
