I believe in Fediverse Supremacy!
For the average consumer it just isn’t the same without being screwed by big companies.
I honestly don’t think the fediverse will ever take off - and that’s a good thing. If it was to get too mainstream, eventually it would need to be standardised and controllerd to accommodate the average person, which would defeat the point of the fediverse as a whole. Imagine if everyone started using Linux as their daily driver tomorrow; a lot would be fixed, but a lot of the original identity would be broken
Imagine if everyone started using Linux as their daily driver tomorrow; a lot would be fixed, but a lot of the original identity would be broken
That’s like saying: “Imagine every country just got rid of monarchy became Republics”
I believe in viewing as much propaganda as possible, because it helps you better see and understand it. No country is acting in our self-interest as a species right now. It is interesting what different people are allowed to say/not say on different apps. (My goal for this year is to learn enough Turkish to get on the Turkish web and better understand the weird cult that doesn’t get along with Erdoğan - they run lots of charter schools in the US for some reason.)
The fediverse is nice, but is never going to be mainstream. It’s not designed to be addicting, because that isn’t its purpose. Maybe it is for the best to have these small holdouts where you can have something analogous to the early internet - where saying “suicide” or “kill” or talking about sensitive topics doesn’t mean your post will never be seen. These small spaces won’t be bought and destroyed.
The UX here needs to drastically improve for more people to see it as an viable alternative.
I use Sync for mobile app and Photon for a web interface. But I think most people are not okay with having to search for these options.
Exactly that yes, it took me a while to find Photon, and I’m someone that’s passionate about tech and works in tech.
Your average new user is going to give up long before that and never use the site again.
It’s also confusing to pick which instance to start with (users need to be guided more)
I mean, the web UI looks clean enough for me. 🤷♂️
For you yes, I’m also okay with it. Bit it’s not great as smooth and nice as what the vast majority of people are used to
Linux propaganda 😎👉
Seems like there’s suddenly a lot of shills for other platforms here.
There are no bots on Lemmy, bleep bloop.
We should form our own propaganda. Nor as a counterpoint, but as part of a wider dedikerte identity.
But to successfully do this without being grouped together with one of the more mainstream platforms, it will have to be so far removed from established axis’ of alignments:
- Impossible to place on left vs right.
- Impossible to compared with authoritarianism vs democracy
- Cannot be tied to a specific geopolitical agenda
- cannot align with a specific country’s interests
How about this: “Sasquatch did 9/11 to distract us from the fact that Big Farming puts nutrients in our food, and the Dutch lgbtq communities are the only one who can save us”
lol the British flag in the bottom right
After Brexit they just wanted to be part of something… anything.
Impossible to place on left vs right
Not possible unfortunately 😅
What you’ve come up with there would be considered “left wing” 😂
Ok, let’s add some war hawking in there: A pro-colonialist stance in regards to invading Bouvet island.
Sorry, but I cannot abide the Dutch
We got https://loops.video/ right?
Dude. The Russian propaganda flows freely around here.
Unless you mean saying the truths that Ukrain is Fash, and that Ukraine is loosing and will lose is state funded propoganda (My bank account says otherwise) I do not know what you are talking about
I mean, freedom means all propaganda is welcome, so that should cancel out, right? Right?
Dont worry, if you put propoganda of opposite polarity together they cancel eachother out. /s
You don’t have to interact with .ml instances, you know?
If you think it’s contained within one instance then you are the exact type of mark they are after.
Fediverse: extremely USA-centric, extremely left and queer. Dissent is punished as hard as posting Winnie Pooh on TikTok.
Imagine wanting to exist without automatic persecution and being told you are “extremely left”
Lmfao eat shit bitch ♥️
But it’s not usually the people running the platform doing that. You can also find instances that go full on 4chan style freeze peach and only delete explicitly illegal stuff, but most of those are probably defederated from the big instances by now.
Downvotes hurt, I get it. But remember, it’s only an attempt to remind you you’re an asshole. It’s up to you whether you believe them or not.
Meh, you’re just building an echo chamber. Everyone around is of the same opinion, everything against is downvoted to hell, sometimes bans are handed out.
And you are starting to believe you’re normal and you’re keeping your space clean of all the “assholes”. But instead you’re just way too far up your own ass most of the time.
Your downvotes don’t hurt. It’s just sad that this ambitious project that could’ve easily replaced reddit, turned into a circle-jerk. The content and opinion-diversity on everything that’s reachable from my current instance is approximately /r/antiwork. I could just go back and spend all my days browsing that one sub without any loss. But such pompous name “fediverse”.
You got nothing folks. Every community is about USA only and all the top posts are “trump bad”, “capitalism bad.” Like nothing else exists. You sabotaged yourselves. There’s no fediverse. There are 20-40k people chanting together “fuck trump, fuck musk, fuck capitalism”. On every instance, in every thread, on every topic.
And you know what, I agree with all three. But even to me you look pathetic. And as my multiple tests confirm, you do not accept any disagreement, and you cannot brin any rational argument to the table, you can only echo.
Almost every other Reddit alternative has been taken over by nazis. You’ve got plenty of space dude. Just fuck off. I’m sure there’s even a fascist lemmy instance you can find instead of here whining because you can’t spread hate. Shit, just go join X.
exploding heads once existed, but they have such low users that just shut down lmfao
How does that work here anyway? Is there a FAQ or something to explain? Do downvoted comments get hidden or pushed down?
Not as far as I can tell. It’s really just an indicator “some people thought your comment was dogshit”. Whether you take it seriously is up to you.
We already have American censorship on the top ones, which will get worse once Project 2025 is enacted…
does Fediverse have a short form video content platform? cuz that’s what people really care about these days
(also side note, we all really should avoid or limit short form video content consumption…)
I believe Pixelfed Loops is the only one currently, it’s actually not half bad, apart from how barebones and stuttery the app is, which isn’t a big deal since the issues are only occasional.
I don’t understand it at all. I find it infuriating. I need long videos to play in the background while I work. I can’t get anything done with this short crap. Maybe that’s the point…
I mean, that’s just two different purposes of two different formats.
Short form content is not made to be played in the background while you work, nor is it made for intricate and detailed analysis or essays. It’s made to have something occupy your mind during short breaks like toilet or smoke break or while waiting for the bus or something.
Long and short form content don’t compete but compliment with each other. If you don’t like one or the other, that’s totally fine, then you’re just not part of the target audience.
Short-form videos, like many things in modern society (e.g. many video games) are essentially just a Skinner Box. You scroll, watch the video, get a hit of pleasure, and then the video automatically replays. That cues you to scroll. Repeat. It’s easy to get stuck in that loop, especially if you already are struggling with executive dysfunction and can’t find motivation/pleasure in ordinary activities.
I guess I just don’t get the hit of pleasure from it. I feel like I’m just getting into whatever it is and then it blue-balls me.
I haven’t checked it out yet but “loops” is supposed to be that
Yes and no, you still have admins here, just like on Reddit, you can get locked out of interacting with thousands of people at the whim of your instance’s admin and the only recourse you’ll have is to join another one instead…
That’s pretty big recourse though.
“The only recourse you’ll have” is the whole point. You have no recourse on Reddit. There is no other Reddit server. There are many Lemmy servers, all over the world, with very different views and policies.
And you’re just jumping from one instance to another with admins that can censor you again and again. You create your own instance and other instances’ admins can censor you by defederating from your own instance.
Just out of curiosity, what’s your solution?
(Putting aside that what you describe is still far more room for ban evasion than non-fediverse platforms.)
https://sh.itjust.works/comment/16065977
Basically, decentralize the back-end independently of the front-end, eliminate admins altogether, mods still exist but they only have power on their communities, they don’t have site wide power.
That wouldn’t work that well, especially when you take law into regard. For example, the european Digital Services Act regulates platforms and platforms have to respond to obligations, sometimes deleting content. Communities are not platforms, instances are. Ergo, you need instance admins be able to comply and respond to the DSA.
The server owners would take care of the content hosted on their server and would need to filter it based on their local laws (to remove CSAM for example, just like current admins need to do), but otherwise this type of decentralization would make the website pretty much a neutral zone that operates outside of specific laws since the people hosting the content (and its backups) could be located all over the world.
How’s that different from now?
Or do you want users to not be banned instancewide for breaking instance rules? Or do you want to abolish instance/server rules aside from local laws altogether?
