I’ll be honest, I didn’t even see the person until I opened it in full-screen. The people making camo patterns know what they’re doing.

        … /s

“Essentially, the Army designed a universal uniform that universally failed in every environment,” said an Army specialist who served two tours in Iraq, wearing UCP in Baghdad and the deserts outside Basra.  “The only time I have ever seen it work well was in a gravel pit.”

It was the camouflage pattern PEO selected after the crayon eaters flexed their (good if specialized) MARPAT and Big Army was rightly embarrassed by having to field troops in DCU/choc-chip with M81 woodland field gear

The brigadier general ultimately responsible for the decision, James Moran, who retired from the Army after leaving Program Executive Office Soldier, has not responded to messages seeking comment.

I have an ongoing bet with a buddy. I win when the Space Force establishes a base off-planet. He wins if the US forms a Time Force branch. Neither of us expect to win in our lifetime.

My money is on your buddy. The most likely scenario there is, is that Trump around New Year’s Eve forgets how time zones work and thinks that China is in the future which leads to him founding the Time Force. And all they can do is travel to the future, at a speed of 60 minutes per hour.

Or more likely, they build a base directly on a time zone line so they can jump between the zones going “4 o’clock, 5 o’clock, 4 o’clock, 5 o’clock…”

I think your buddy is most likely to get the money at least. You’ll be dead before yours is true, but if we need a Time Force, your buddy may still get his money. It might be created in 1000 years, but someone may let him know he won and get it to him.

WHEN we need a Time Force they’ll probably have travel locked down so it’s unlikely someone would make it back to deliver the news. Might have to add a rule about not disrupting the time continuum and just let descendents claim the reward.

I want to say we agreed that the base had to be out of Earth’s orbit. I’d have to go over the details again as we made the wager a long time ago and after several drinks.

Does a moon base count? Technically the moon would have orbital priority but it itself or its the Earth. Does an aldrin cycler count as a base? Does something in an unstable orbit that happens to largely coincide with earths orbit count?

No on the moon base as the Nazis already did it. The base needs to be installed on a terrestrial body other than Earth and its moon. Just to keep things fair since we’re unsure how long it might be before the fabric of time is discovered to require military intervention.

Base on moon would not be orbiting the earth because the moon does not orbit the earth.

Thats a meaningless distintion, the moon orbits the earth with an elliptical orbit in the Earth’s frame of reference, or an eliptical orbit with fairly large, low frequency oscillations in the Sun’s frame of reference. The same is true for something in LEO except the oscilations are smaller and shorter period.

Bottom image is from Generation Kill. That show was fucking amazing. Lauded as one of the most realistic depictions of Marines in the Iraq war and filled with digs at military leadership (like the one in the caption). Won a bunch of awards including Emmys.

The suit would need to be refrigerated too. Heat is the easiest thing to see in space.

Im curious about the physics of directing waste heat into a beam. You cannot, at all, just stop producing waste heat. So the only way to hide it would be to ensure it goes in a controlled direction. But that would imply prefect infared mirrors which seem unlikely to be possible. Or i suppose you could dump all your waste heat into a heatsink, then periodically eject that sink from the ship. Maybe you could pump all your waste heat from the sink into the exhaust, since when you have your exhaust on there is no stealth anyways? Then when you want to hide it just pumps the heat back into the sink where its stored until next thrust?

I think how hard sci-fi usually does it is how you say at the end. You store it if you need to be dark, then use your propellant to dump it when you don’t need to be dark anymore. You’d actually recover some of the energy as delta-V in this way too I assume.

That being said, in the eventuality that you end up in space wearing nothing but your uniform, being seen by the enemy would be the last of your concerns.

Always thought that was weird when I used to work on a navy base, and I don’t know if it is typical of the other branches too, but they seemed to have a slightly altered version of their uniforms pushed on them every 6 months or so.

That is partly for opsec reasons.

Forcing potential “unauthorised personnel” to constantly be sourcing new uniforms is a legitimate method to add another layer of difficulty to gaining access. The people who really give a shit will notice if you’re wearing out of date uniforms.

The fact that USSSF has woodland camo just confirms they’re a front for the SGC because every other planet looks like British Columbia.
